Project Description
Pepa Plana, Catalan actress and clown, is the soul and artistic director of the company that bears her name. Cia. Pepa Plana is a national benchmark in the genre, known for the quality of its shows and its contribution to raising the visibility of female clowns, positioning her as one of the leading figures in Europe.
Pepa Plana comes from the world of acting and graduated from the Institut del Teatre de Barcelona in 1989. After taking her first steps in the industry, she founded the company Preterit Perfecte, with which she created and toured three productions. It was not until 1998 that she took the definitive step of creating her own company, with a clear intention of making clown theatre for adult audiences. Since then, she has premiered and toured twelve shows, including: De Pe a Pa (1998), Giulietta (2000), Hatzàrdia (2004), L’atzar (2004), and Penèlope (2010). With Èxode (2011), for the first time, she shared the stage with two other renowned clowns, Joan Montanyès ‘Monti’ and Joan Valentí ‘Nan’.
Between 2012 and 2013, she embarked on a new stage of her career with Cirque du Soleil, participating in the creation and tour of the prestigious Quebec-based company’s show Amaluna.
She continued her artistic journey with Despistats (2014), Paradís Pintat (2016), Suite (2017), Veus que no veus (2018) — in which, for the first time, a duo of female clowns was formed — and Si tu te’n vas (2022), marking a transition into a trio.
Many of her shows have toured extensively across Europe and Latin America. Alongside public recognition, she has received numerous awards, including the Premi Nacional de Cultura (2014) and the Creu de Sant Jordi (2024), awarded by the Generalitat de Catalunya, as well as the Premio Nacional de Circo (2022), granted by Spain’s Ministry of Culture.
All of this has established Pepa Plana as the most recognized Catalan female clown, whose career has paved the way for a new market in the national theatre scene. Each new project she launches is met with great anticipation.
Pepa Plana is also the artistic director of the International Festival of Female Clowns in Andorra, an absolute reference in the genre.
